The first clip for Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac has been released and two things struck me:
1. The early glimpse of footage is from "Chapter 1: The Compleat Angler." So Von Trier is taking a segmented approach a la 9 Songs, albeit with (at least, I suspect) different characters in highly sexual situations. Von Trier has used chapters before, but without any of the main talent on display, I’m wondering if it will feel more like an anthology film. I don’t know if the approach can sustain two movies (Nympho is a double feature), but I am a Von Trier nut, so whatever I can get, I’ll take.
2. Zentropa Productions is really pushing these movies hard. Nymphomaniac could be a “breakout hit” for Von Trier — at least in terms of art house success. Melancholia did decent business, but I’m guessing Zentropa thinks they have a 50 Shades of Grey phenomenon on their hands. Tantalizing footage will be the selling point. They’re releasing clips pretty early — Part 1 doesn’t have an official release date but is expected in the Fall — so let’s hope the marketing doesn’t climax too early.
